General News.

Hello everyone, firstly thanks to all the members who helped last year to make it a great season its not compulsory and we don’t ask for help it was volunteered,  whether beating, working dogs, cage work, or being (nearly shot )no kidding here it all adds up to a good club with good members.

Well we are 5 years in from when I started and a lot of money later! I feel we have a formula now that will continually be improved as we move forward, nothing is for ever and we have let go or lost land luckily not to much and its in general that this balances out with new leases getting sorted not very long after we lose a piece.

WALKED UP SHOOTS

Hi shooters and stalkers, regarding the season past we have had some excellent results fro our walked up shoots with 47 being best day bag at Llangollen mixed duck and pheasant, and averaging 25 birds through the season all from 250 pheasant to wood, and 200 duck on the 3 ponds here, Mapowder produced a 25-28 bird day all through the season with the drives from cover crop being particularly good being a first year here we learned a lot about where the birds head for which no one can tell in any first year, both shoots were opened up in January for cleaning up cocks in the last two weeks. We have ordered 1200 pheasants for this coming season and at Llangollen the cages 2 and 3 (on top of the mountain) are being utilized this should bring the days up to 50 –70 bird days and Mapowder similarly this time a duck pond has been improved and is being cleaned out to facilitate a duck flight 200 duck being introduced An old Hard top non-mot’d petrol land rover has been purchased to allow the part time keeper to feed the bins with ease. Roe deer at both locations have had 30% fat around the kidneys which indicates healthy animals, we are well short of our anticipated cull figures but both Pulham and mapowder have had low density stalking Bagber down the road has had 3 visits nil kills as animals have not been in a position to take on safety basis, I am pleased to see the disciplines from our stalkers are adhered to with professionalism.

Well the season has got of with a really busy period its nice to see use-age of all land filtering through at last, and we had a grouse day on the 12th and pinned 10 bird the landowner let us have the day as a thanks for work I have done on his lake over the season, we have put effort into placing barrels on some shoots and getting the farmer to fill the bins we need a volunteer to do this at Presteigne I’m happy to pay fuel and hourage £8.00 per hour for this service once a week in season. There are about a dozen barrels here, also during the summer we need a work party to clear out the pond in the centre of the land here in preparation for 50 duck being put down for next season. But all in all its been busy and thanks to Tim Hill and Jeremy Puzey for all the hard work at mapowder where the shoot days are getting a good response from members.

As you will guess we have come a long way down the road now, and I am getting a clearer picture of what is wanted within the membership, so I have increased access to specific organized days in various locations, where a 30-bird day happens. Map powder and Llangollen, Hawick, walked up organized We have however not lost much in the way of rough shoots but improved quality at Presteigne and Bala (new) we have put ex-layers down here as we have not got vermin control sorted as of yet here and the book as you go shoots, with the increased maintenance that walked up shots demand we have had help from members putting cages up repairing what is in existence and generally working towards a common goal which is still within the frame work of low cost shooting, we have 3 part time keepers who will look after birds on the ground, do maintenance, for us on a 2 day basis.
